Once the new sheen starts to fade from No Man’s Sky’s unique visuals and exploration mechanics, a sense of tedium starts to sink in. It also happens to be the game’s biggest weakness, particularly for folks who hunger for more things to do or want some semblance of structure. It’s this sense of freedom and discovery with a dash of uneventful pencil pushing that is the game’s biggest strength. Building a six-man team for combat, meanwhile, can be fun thanks to the various tribes, elements and roles that the various Yo-Kai can fulfill. One thing that the game does well is layering in a lot of stuff to do outside of the main adventure, whether it be searching for hidden Yo-Kai, fulfilling side quests or catching all sorts of bugs and fish. Granted, the game also has its share of serious moments that add some poignancy to the game though some also feel like recycled anime-style plot writing. Yo-Kai Watch 2 certainly knows its target audience and sprinkles in a lot of dialogue and scenes that young kids will find funny. Overall, though, they’re essentially the same game. The second installment of Level 5’s Japanese phenomenon makes it to Western shores with the arrival of “Yo-Kai Watch 2.” This release uses the same tactic employed by Pokemon by coming up with two versions, with some slight differences via exclusive creatures and some minor changes.
